In June, 2012, the law amending the Professional Code and other legislative provisions in the field of mental health and human relations<\/a> came into force. This law, which was called Bill 21, aims, among other things, to regulate the practice of psychotherapy in order to protect the public. It defines psychotherapy as :<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0\u2026un traitement psychologique pour un trouble mental, pour des perturbations comportementales ou pour tout autre probl\u00e8me entra\u00eenant une souffrance ou une d\u00e9tresse psychologique qui a pour but de favoriser chez le client des changements significatifs dans son fonctionnement cognitif, \u00e9motionnel ou comportemental, dans son syst\u00e8me interpersonnel, dans sa personnalit\u00e9 ou dans son \u00e9tat de sant\u00e9. Ce traitement va au-del\u00e0 d\u2019une aide visant \u00e0 faire face aux difficult\u00e9s courantes ou d\u2019un rapport de conseils ou de soutien.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0 [Article 187.1 du Code des professions]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Despite the presentation made by the AATQ to the Commission des institutions regarding Bill 21, on June 11, 2009<\/a>, and the persistent efforts of the OPTA committee (Ordre professionnel des th\u00e9rapeutes par les arts) since then, art therapists are not immediately recognized as being able to practice psychotherapy.<\/p>\n

This can be explained in two ways.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, the master’s level training in art therapy offered in Quebec does not currently give access to a psychotherapist’s license<\/a>. The universities offering the program (Concordia and Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec en Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue – UQAT) are in the process of ensuring that their programs meet the psychotherapy training requirements established by the Ordre des psychologues du Qu\u00e9bec. But the project is not yet concluded.<\/p>\n

In addition, people who want to obtain a psychotherapy permit must meet the requirements set out in the psychotherapy regulation<\/a>, the first being to be a member of one of the following professional orders: Ordre professionnel des conseillers et conseill\u00e8res d\u2019orientation du Qu\u00e9bec, Ordre professionnel des ergoth\u00e9rapeutes du Qu\u00e9bec, Ordre professionnel des infirmi\u00e8res et infirmiers du Qu\u00e9bec, Ordre professionnel des psycho\u00e9ducateurs et psycho\u00e9ducatrices du Qu\u00e9bec, Ordre professionnel des travailleurs sociaux et des th\u00e9rapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n

Thus, art therapists who do not meet this first criteria cannot have access to the psychotherapy permit and are therefore not authorized by law to practice psychotherapy.<\/p>\n

However<\/strong>, art therapists can practice art therapy, as specified in the explanatory guide<\/a> to the law concerned:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0L\u2019art-th\u00e9rapie, en tant que m\u00e9dium, peut fonctionner de mani\u00e8re autonome en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 son propre code, ses propres r\u00e9f\u00e9rences et \u00e0 ses propres m\u00e9thodes. In order to ensure that they have an exemplary practice that respects the limits imposed by law, art therapists are invited to consult the document drawn up by the professional orders<\/a> and distinguishing what is psychotherapy from what it is not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
